The
Silver
Valley
, heart of
Shoshone
County
, was one of the first frontiers of the
Pacific Northwest
. Since 1882, men have worked and played here, employing and
enjoying the natural resources granted this region. Miners
and loggers have shaped the Valley’s past, the present,
and will continue to play a strong part in its future.
Gold was discovered by
Andrew J. Prichard in 1881 near the present site of
Murray
. Thousands of people came to this land to mine the precious
metals beneath the surface and seek their fortunes and
future.
The mining district was
a place of discovery and conquest. Relatively remote, the
principle law at the time was survival. Since then, the
Silver
Valley
, rich beyond all imagination in mineral treasures, has had
a colorful mining history. We have been nurtured by this
heritage and are still indebted to the pioneers of this
region. From its beginning, and extending through 1984, this
district has produced metals valued at $4,608,362,336. It
literally has a silver lining
The
Silver
Valley
is rugged, tranquil, wild, vigorous, and serene. It is
rounded mountains and deep-green forested highlands. It is
rugged canyons with threads of rushing streams running
through them. There is a succession of sparkling, emerald
lakes amongst its alpine topography; remnants of glacial
action ages ago. It is here that cities and the wilderness
come together. It is a place where one’s spirit can be
perpetually refreshed by the sights and sounds of nature’s
dominant features and of her performance.
The
Silver
Valley
symbolizes the free spirit of
Idaho
’s past, present, and her future. There is an infinite
array of opportunities to experience the enchantment of its
broad valleys, the crystalline beauty of its lakes, its
swift-flowing rivers, and the charm of its snow mantled
peaks. Whatever your reason – fun, fortune or fancy –
the
Silver
Valley
has much to offer.
